Crossing to Argentina
The road out of the park retraces to Cerro Castillo, the small settlement that serves as the Chilean side of the Paso Río Don Guillermo border crossing. The Chilean post — the Complejo Fronterizo Río Don Guillermo — handles the exit from Chile: immigration, customs, and the agricultural inspection that requires all fresh fruit, vegetables, and meat to be declared or discarded. The crossing typically moves quickly for private vehicles. Exit the car, present documents, cancel the temporary vehicle import permit, and allow the SAG agricultural inspector to check the cooler.
The no-man's land between the two posts stretches about 15 kilometres (9 miles) across open pampa — the moment the Chilean pavement ends, the road turns to gravel on the Argentine approach. The Argentine post at Cancha Carrera is a modest installation in the middle of nowhere; process the entry, collect the tourist card, and continue. The gravel road extends beyond the Argentine gate for some distance before pavement resumes, so the pace drops accordingly.
