Lunch: Baobá Raízes e Tradições
Before climbing the serra, lunch at Baoba Raizes e Tradicoes, at the foot of the hill at Sítio Brejo do Vieira. The restaurant is run by Mãe Neide Oyá D'Oxum — chef, yalorixá, and recognised Patrimônio Vivo of the state of Alagoas — and it is the right meal to eat before the park above. The kitchen is afro-quilombola: recipes cooked in clay pots, many of them rooted in the religious and domestic traditions of the quilombo culture. The menu runs to acarajé with dried shrimp and caruru, amalá, malungo, galinhada, and xequeté, the ceremonial drink of the candomblé houses. It is a buffet at around R$95 per person.
