Crossing at Paso Rodolfo Roballos
Paso Rodolfo Roballos sits at 651 metres (2,135 ft) above sea level, a low but notably remote pass that handles a small fraction of the traffic that moves through the more travelled crossings to the north. The Argentine facilities — solar-powered, lightly staffed — process vehicles efficiently; the Chilean post, roughly 11 kilometres further west across no man's land, is equally unhurried. Budget thirty to forty minutes for the full crossing in each direction if everything goes smoothly, and confirm passport stamps before leaving — at this distance from anywhere, a missed entry is a complication worth avoiding.
One practical note for those leaving Chile via this crossing on a return journey: since 2023, travellers departing Chile at Paso Roballos are required to complete an online salvoconducto (police clearance) in advance, as there is no PDI immigration function at the post itself. Crossing from Argentina into Chile, as on this day, requires no such pre-registration.
