The Fin del Mundo Sign and the Rambla

From the museum, the natural next move is a walk along the waterfront. The Fin del Mundo sign on the Rambla — the broad promenade that runs along Avenida Maipú facing the Beagle Channel — is a fixed stop for everyone who passes through Ushuaia, and earns its place: the backdrop of the channel, the mountains of Isla Navarino on the Chilean shore to the south, and the particular quality of late-afternoon light at this latitude make it something more than a photo opportunity. The Rambla itself is the city's front porch, and walking its length gives a sense of how much Ushuaia has arranged itself around the fact of the water. The tourist pier, the moored expedition vessels, the cold grey-blue of the channel — all of it is immediately present from the promenade in a way that the rest of the town, climbing up into the hillside behind, is not.

Desde el museo, lo natural es caminar hacia la orilla. El cartel del Fin del Mundo en la Rambla —la amplia avenida que corre junto a Avenida Maipú frente al Canal Beagle— es una parada ineludible para quienes pasan por Ushuaia, y la merece bien. El telón de fondo del canal, las montañas de la Isla Navarino en la costa chilena al sur, y la calidad particular de la luz a esa hora del día en esta latitud hacen que sea algo más que una oportunidad fotográfica. O letreiro do Fim do Mundo na Rambla — a ampla avenida que corre ao longo da Avenida Maipú, de frente para o Canal Beagle — é uma parada obrigatória para quem passa por Ushuaia, e justifica plenamente seu lugar. O pano de fundo do canal, as montanhas da Isla Navarino na costa chilena ao sul, e a qualidade particular da luz no fim da tarde nesta latitude fazem com que seja muito mais do que uma oportunidade para tirar fotos. A Rambla é a sala de estar da cidade voltada para o exterior, e percorrê-la de uma ponta à outra dá a dimensão de quanto Ushuaia se organizou em torno da presença da água. O píer turístico, os navios de expedição atracados, o cinza azulado e frio do canal — tudo está imediatamente visível da avenida de um jeito que o resto da cidade, subindo pela encosta para o interior, simplesmente não está.
