The Short Run North

A departure after lunch from Puerto Montt still puts the arrival in Valdivia well before evening. The route runs north on Ruta 5 — the Panamericana — through the flat dairy country of the Los Lagos region, four lanes of well-paved highway that make the two and a half hours pass quickly after the gravel and ferry landings of the day before, with a fuel stop at the Aramco station along the way. The highway peels off into city streets on the approach to Valdivia, crossing into a town defined less by its roads than by the three rivers that meet here — the Calle Calle, the Cau Cau, and the Valdivia.

Una salida después del mediodía desde Puerto Montt permite llegar a Valdivia bien antes de que oscurezca. La ruta sigue hacia el norte por la Ruta 5 —la Panamericana— atravesando las tierras planas dedicadas a la ganadería lechera de la región de Los Lagos, cuatro carriles de autopista bien pavimentada que hacen que las dos horas y media transcurran rápidamente después de los caminos de ripio y los transbordadores del día anterior, con una parada para cargar combustible en la estación Aramco en el trayecto. La carretera se convierte en calles urbanas conforme se aproxima a Valdivia, penetrando en una ciudad cuya identidad está marcada menos por sus vías que por los tres ríos que confluyen aquí: el Calle Calle, el Cau Cau y el Valdivia.

O Trajeto Curto para o Norte

Uma saída após o almoço de Puerto Montt permite chegar a Valdivia bem antes do anoitecer. A rota segue para o norte pela Ruta 5 — a Panamericana — atravessando as terras planas dedicadas à pecuária leiteira da região de Los Lagos, quatro faixas de rodovia bem pavimentada que tornam as duas horas e meia de percurso ágeis depois dos caminhos de cascalho e travessias de balsa do dia anterior, com uma parada para abastecimento na estação Aramco ao longo do caminho. A rodovia se transforma em ruas urbanas conforme se aproxima de Valdivia, penetrando uma cidade cuja característica não é tanto definida por suas vias, mas pelos três rios que aqui se encontram: o Calle Calle, o Cau Cau e o Valdivia.
