The lake district reveals itself gradually on this drive — first the flat farmland north of Valdivia, then, as the road bends east, the long blue stretch of Lago Villarrica with its namesake volcano rising smoke-wreathed at the far end. A 9:00 am departure gets the crew into Pucón right around lunch, with the whole afternoon left over for a short loop out to the Liucura valley — turquoise pools at Ojos del Caburgua, then a proper soak at Termas Los Pozones.
The Drive East
A 9:00 am departure from Valdivia heads out on Avenida España before picking up Ruta 202 toward Lanco, a quieter secondary road through farm country before rejoining Ruta 5 Sur for a short stretch north. A fuel stop at the Shell station near Lanco breaks up the drive before the route turns east onto Ruta S-91, leaving the Panamericana behind for good this morning. The road climbs gently into the Araucanía, past Lago Calafquén's edge, before dropping into Villarrica, the lake town that shares its name with the volcano looming beyond it. From there the route follows the lake's northern shore into Pucón, the cone of Volcán Villarrica growing larger through the windshield the closer the road gets to town — timed to roll in right around lunch.
