Cerro Alegre and the Ascensor Concepción
The afternoon settles into Cerro Alegre, the historic hill at the heart of Valparaíso's UNESCO-listed core, its narrow streets lined with 19th-century mansions, murals, and views that drop straight down to the port. A short walk over leads to the Ascensor Concepción, the oldest of the city's surviving funiculars, running since 1883 when it was built for the British, German, and American merchants who first settled this hill — still creaking up the same slope on the same principle, electric now instead of water-counterbalanced. It connects the Plan below, by the old Reloj Turri clock tower, to Paseo Gervasoni above, one of the two hilltop promenades that make Cerro Concepción what it is.
