The last long haul of the Peruvian descent to the altiplano — coastal desert to colonial valley to high puna to the shore of Titicaca, all in a single day. It is a big day by any measure, and after the ascent from sea level the rest that follows in Puno will be well earned.
The 7:00 am departure from Tacna follows the Panamericana Sur north, the last easy stretch of the day — flat coastal desert, well paved, with nothing much to slow the pace. By mid-morning the road descends into the valley of the Río Moquegua, where the colonial city of Moquegua appears abruptly against the surrounding desert terraces, its position chosen centuries ago for exactly the reason it still holds visitors today: water and shelter in an otherwise punishing landscape.
Moquegua's history reaches back well before the Spanish — Wari and Tiwanaku settlements occupied this valley from around 600 to 1100 AD, drawn by the same agricultural potential that later made the region famous for wine and pisco production under colonial rule. The Plaza de Armas is the place to see it distilled: an ornamental fountain in colonial style at its centre, old casonas with the characteristic mojinete roofline unique to this region, and the Catedral facing the square. The Museo Contisuyo, housed against the ruins of the old Iglesia Matriz, holds a strong collection covering the pre-Hispanic cultures of the valley for anyone wanting the fuller picture before continuing.
Fuel at Grifo El Baúl in Torata, a short distance from Moquegua, named for the flat-topped mountain visible from the road — Cerro Baúl, crowned with the ruins of a Wari fortress-settlement dating to the same era as the valley's earliest occupation.
Beyond Torata the road begins its real work for the day, climbing out of the valley and onto the altiplano proper — a long, steady ascent that trades cultivated terraces for open puna grassland, then finally for the bare, wind-scoured plateau above 4,000 metres. This is the psychological hinge of the day: somewhere on this climb, the desert coast of Peru gives way for good to the high plateau that will define the rest of the route to Lake Titicaca.
By early afternoon the road reaches Titire, a small alpaca-herding settlement at over 4,000 metres near the boundary between the Moquegua and Puno regions — a boundary that, as it happens, both regions have historically claimed for themselves, leaving Titire's roughly one thousand residents caught in an unresolved tug-of-war between two departments. The village's economy runs almost entirely on alpaca: an estimated ten thousand head graze the surrounding puna, and their meat and wool, worked into warm clothing, are sold from the settlement to travellers passing through on the highway. The Plaza Titire, at the centre of the village alongside a small sports court and a community hall built with support from a nearby mining operation, is the natural place to stop, stretch, and — if the timing and available food allow — take lunch among the only settlement of any size for a long stretch of empty puna in either direction.
The road continues across the high plateau, crossing into the Puno region proper, before reaching Laraqueri, the capital of the Pichacani district and, at nearly 3,935 metres, a substantial highland town by the standards of this stretch of road. Laraqueri has a long-standing reputation as a stop for travellers between Moquegua and Puno — thermal springs a short distance away are prized locally for treating rheumatism, and the alpaca-wool textiles woven and sold here are considered good value even by regional standards. On the approach to town, keep an eye on the low hill just beside the road: this is the site of the Chullpas de Cutimbo, pre-Inca and Inca funerary towers standing in plain view of passing traffic, a quieter and less-visited cousin of the more famous towers at Sillustani, which lies ahead on the way into Puno.
The final stretch descends gradually from Laraqueri toward the shore of Lake Titicaca, and Puno announces itself first through glimpses of open water — the highest navigable lake in the world, spreading out ahead after a day spent almost entirely inland. Puno sits at 3,830 metres, a genuine jump from the sea-level start in Tacna this morning, and after the length and altitude of the day, there is no agenda for the rest of it beyond settling in. Find dinner, drink plenty of water, and let the body adjust before tomorrow, when the floating islands of the Uros and the rest of Titicaca's attractions are the actual order of business.
