Picnic — Upper Elqui Valley

Above Vicuña, Ruta 41 continues deeper into the narrowing gorge through Paihuano and Pisco Elqui — the latter a small, photogenic village of painted adobe around a red wooden church, worth a pause if the mood takes you. Beyond Pisco Elqui the road continues to climb and the valley closes in on both sides, the canyon walls striated in ochre and rust. Somewhere between Pisco Elqui and the La Laguna reservoir, find a flat stretch of verge or a river bend and stop for lunch. The upper valley is as good a place as you will find anywhere on this trip to eat in the open air — no facilities, no tables, just the river sound and the cordillera pressing in on three sides. The gravel begins shortly after La Laguna; this is the last comfortable stop before the climb.

The Climb to Complejo Fronterizo Agua Negra

Beyond La Laguna, the road leaves the valley floor and begins the serious ascent. The gravel is well-maintained but the track narrows as altitude accumulates — at times to a single lane cut into the cliff face, with the valley far below and the peaks rising above 6,000 metres on either side. Cerro Mercedario, one of the highest summits in the Americas outside of the main Aconcagua massif, is visible from the upper approach.

This route has been a crossing point since pre-Columbian times. In 1575, the San Juan Cabildo petitioned the Spanish Crown to formalise a road linking San Juan to La Serena through the Agua Negra area — the earliest documented advocacy for the route — though no construction followed for another four centuries. The cattle drovers of the 19th century wore their own trails into the rock and called them senderos de uñas, nail trails.

The Complejo Fronterizo Agua Negra sits at around 4,500 metres on the Chilean side. The crossing is quiet — low traffic, no queues, officers present on both sides.
