Notes

The day has two distinct halves — a border crossing in the morning and a lunar landscape at sunset — with the town of San Pedro serving as the hinge between them. Everything before lunch is about getting through the mountains and into Chile; everything after is about the light on the salt.

To the Border

The morning departs Susques early, fuel at the YPF station before the town's low adobe grid gives way to the open puna one last time. Ruta 52 west is fully paved, a fast, well-maintained road across increasingly stark terrain, climbing steadily toward the frontier.

The Complejo Fronterizo Jama sits at 4,200 metres, one of the highest integrated border posts in the Andes — both Argentine exit and Chilean entry formalities are handled at a single facility here rather than at two separate posts kilometres apart, which makes this one of the more straightforward high-altitude crossings in the region. Passport and vehicle documentation are checked on the Argentine side, followed immediately by Chilean entry processing and the standard SAG agricultural declaration — no fresh fruit, meat, dairy, or honey crossing into Chile undeclared. Beyond the complex, Chilean Route 27 descends steadily off the altiplano, paved the entire way, dropping through increasingly dramatic desert scenery toward the oasis at the bottom.
