The Argentine side of Iguazú puts visitors on top of and beside the falls rather than looking across at them, and the morning belongs to that closer, wetter perspective before the road turns south through Misiones to a small, seasonal bridge built for exactly this kind of trip: a shortcut into Brazil's southern beach country.

The Argentine Side of the Falls

Roughly 80 percent of the roughly 275 individual falls that make up the Iguazú system sit on the Argentine side, and the Parque Nacional Iguazú is built to get visitors right into the middle of them rather than looking across at a single panorama. A little electric train, the Tren Ecológico de la Selva, shuttles between three stations — Central, Cataratas, and Garganta — connecting the Circuito Superior and Circuito Inferior, walkways along the tops and bases of a string of named falls, to the Garganta del Diablo, the most powerful of them all, reached by an 1,100-metre footbridge laid directly over the river above an 80-metre drop. A full exploration of the Argentine side is usually reckoned as a full day's outing; with a morning in hand, the Garganta del Diablo walk is the one piece not worth skipping, with whichever of the two circuits fits the remaining time layered on around it.

South Through Misiones

From the park, the road turns south through Misiones province, red earth and yerba mate plantations replacing the immediate forest of the falls. A toll is paid at Colonia Victoria along the way, one of the province's many peajes on this stretch of highway.

Crossing into Brazil

The border here is the Puente Internacional Comandante Rosales, a modest 102-metre bridge over the Río Pepirí Guazú with no real town at either end — the nearest settlements are Cruce Caballero on the Argentine side and Paraíso on the Brazilian, with San Pedro and São Miguel do Oeste the closer places of any size. The crossing only opened to ordinary tourist traffic in 2018, after a twenty-year wait for Brazil to staff a migration post on its bank; before that, only cargo trucks could use it. It now runs as a summer-season crossing, open daily into the evening, popular with Argentine travelers cutting roughly 150 km off the older route to Santa Catarina's beaches — a much quieter, far less bureaucratic affair than yesterday's bridge at Foz.

Arrival: Itapiranga

The road settles into Itapiranga, the westernmost town in Santa Catarina, wedged into a corner where the state meets both Rio Grande do Sul and Argentina — the Rio Uruguai forming one border, the Rio Peperi-Guaçu the other. It's a German colony rather than the mix seen further north: founded in 1926 by Catholic families brought over by the Sociedade União Popular, first named Porto Novo before taking its current Tupi-Guarani name — "red stone" — a few years later. That German inheritance still shows in the town's dance troupes and choral groups, and in an Oktoberfest that's become the local calendar's biggest date. Tonight is simply for settling into a very different corner of Brazil than the one left behind two days ago.
