The day says goodbye to Brazil on two very different notes — a visit to the country's largest mosque, then a walk along its most famous waterfall system — before crossing into Argentina on the bridge that finally ended a century of ferry crossings between the two countries.

Morning at the Mosque

The day begins at the Mesquita Omar Ibn Al-Khattab, raised in the early 1980s by fifty families of the local Muslim community, many of them Lebanese immigrants who'd arrived in Foz do Iguaçu to work on the Itaipu dam and found no place nearby to pray. Finished in 1983 after eighteen months of work, it's the largest mosque in Brazil and the second-largest in Latin America, behind only the King Fahd center in Buenos Aires — its octagonal prayer hall, roofed by what was at the time the largest free-span concrete dome in the region, holds several hundred worshippers beneath walls dense with arabesque detail.

The Brazilian Side of the Falls

From the mosque, the road leads into the Parque Nacional do Iguaçu, 185,000 hectares of Atlantic Forest protecting the falls themselves. Private cars stop at the entrance; a park shuttle carries visitors in to the Trilha das Cataratas, a paved, railed walkway of a little over a kilometre that unspools one view after another of the 2.7-kilometre curtain of falls before ending at the Garganta do Diabo — the Devil's Throat — where a footbridge pushes out into the spray for the closest possible look, with a panoramic elevator lifting to a second viewpoint above. There's real time in hand here: the trail itself is only a couple of hours at an easy pace, which leaves room for lunch inside the park or, for anyone with an appetite for more, a stop at Parque das Aves next door — a large bird park that's become one of Foz's most popular add-ons, though entirely optional against a day that already has plenty to it.

Crossing into Argentina

From Brazilian customs, the road crosses the Ponte Tancredo Neves into Argentina. Opened in 1985, it replaced the small boats that had ferried people and cargo across the Rio Iguaçu for decades from a crossing point once known as Porto Meira, and painted half in Brazilian colors and half in Argentine, it's since become the busiest land border crossing in the country. It's also notoriously unpredictable — a Friday afternoon crossing can mean a ten-minute formality or a wait stretching into hours, with no real way to know in advance. Worth checking a live queue-tracking app like Puenty before committing to a departure time, and worth holding the whole afternoon loosely: there's nothing waiting on the other side tonight but dinner, so there's no real cost to letting the border set its own pace.

Arrival: Puerto Iguazú

Whenever the crossing clears, the road settles into Puerto Iguazú — a smaller, quieter counterpart to Foz do Iguaçu, oriented around the same river and the same falls, but with its own rhythm. Tonight is simply for arriving, whatever time that turns out to be, and resting up before the Argentine side of the falls — a very different vantage point on the same water — becomes tomorrow's focus.
