The day's real destination is Itaipu, with a 3:00pm reservation for the Itaipu Especial — the deep version of the tour, running roughly two and a half hours and going well past the standard exterior viewpoints into the plant itself: the central control room, the generator gallery, the turbine shaft.
The name comes from Tupi-Guarani for "the stone that sings," after a rock formation once submerged nearby — an odd bit of poetry for a dam that also drowned Sete Quedas, a set of falls that before 1982 rivaled Iguaçu itself for scale. What replaced it is almost absurd in its own right: more than 12 million cubic metres of concrete, the equivalent of over 200 Maracanã stadiums, dammed across the Paraná River to supply nearly a fifth of Brazil's electricity and over 90 percent of Paraguay's. The American Society of Civil Engineers later ranked it alongside the Panama Canal and the Channel Tunnel as one of the seven modern wonders of civil engineering.
The Especial circuit is built to make that scale legible from the inside rather than across a reservoir. Parts of the walk involve real stairs — two flights down toward the turbine shaft, two back up — and closed shoes are required. Check-in is 30 minutes ahead of the scheduled departure, which makes the final approach to the complex part of a carefully timed run rather than a casual one.
The tour wraps by early evening, leaving only a short final drive into Foz do Iguaçu. Tonight is deliberately quiet — the Falls are tomorrow, and the day after crosses into Argentina for another angle on the same river system. For tonight, the plan is simply to check in, eat, and rest before the next two days begin.
