The road finally reaches the western edge of Paraná today, following BR-277 almost the whole way from Guarapuava to Foz do Iguaçu. It's another long highway day, but the landscape shifts from the Campos Gerais into open agricultural country. The reward at the end isn't the Falls yet — that's tomorrow — but something built on the same river: Itaipu.

Across Western Paraná

The road settles onto BR-277, the highway that cuts clean across the state, passing through Candói and Laranjeiras do Sul as the country opens into rolling farmland. This is soy country — Paraná's single largest crop, and the west its heaviest-producing region, with Cascavel and neighboring Toledo regularly topping the state's rankings. What corn shares the fields with soy here mostly never leaves the region: this stretch of Paraná also drives one of Brazil's biggest poultry and hog industries, Toledo alone leading the country in swine production, and the second corn harvest exists largely to feed it.

By late morning comes Cascavel itself, an important hub of that same agricultural economy — lunch and fuel both taken here, timed early rather than late, since the afternoon at Itaipu runs on a fixed schedule that leaves no room to linger.

West of Cascavel, BR-277 continues through the heart of the farm country, past Céu Azul and São Miguel do Iguaçu as the border region comes into view. There's nothing to stop for along this stretch; the road itself carries the day, steadily trading the interior for the Paraná River.

Itaipu

The day's real destination is Itaipu, with a 3:00pm reservation for the Itaipu Especial — the deep version of the tour, running roughly two and a half hours and going well past the standard exterior viewpoints into the plant itself: the central control room, the generator gallery, the turbine shaft.

The name comes from Tupi-Guarani for "the stone that sings," after a rock formation once submerged nearby — an odd bit of poetry for a dam that also drowned Sete Quedas, a set of falls that before 1982 rivaled Iguaçu itself for scale. What replaced it is almost absurd in its own right: more than 12 million cubic metres of concrete, the equivalent of over 200 Maracanã stadiums, dammed across the Paraná River to supply nearly a fifth of Brazil's electricity and over 90 percent of Paraguay's. The American Society of Civil Engineers later ranked it alongside the Panama Canal and the Channel Tunnel as one of the seven modern wonders of civil engineering.

The Especial circuit is built to make that scale legible from the inside rather than across a reservoir. Parts of the walk involve real stairs — two flights down toward the turbine shaft, two back up — and closed shoes are required. Check-in is 30 minutes ahead of the scheduled departure, which makes the final approach to the complex part of a carefully timed run rather than a casual one.

Arrival: Foz do Iguaçu

The tour wraps by early evening, leaving only a short final drive into Foz do Iguaçu. Tonight is deliberately quiet — the Falls are tomorrow, and the day after crosses into Argentina for another angle on the same river system. For tonight, the plan is simply to check in, eat, and rest before the next two days begin.

The long road through Paraná is behind now. The Iguaçu River is next.
