The road west from Montevideo is one of Uruguay's oldest corridors, worth a day for the Swiss colony midway and the unusual city at journey's end.

The Drive

The day departs Montevideo at 9:30 am on Ruta 1 Brigadier General Manuel Oribe, a 177-kilometre toll highway named in 1975 for the general. The route crosses cattle country before turning south onto Ruta 53 to Nueva Helvecia by mid-morning. Budget an hour there before continuing to Colónia del Sacramento, reaching the Barrio Histórico by afternoon.

Colonia Suiza

The turnoff drops into Nueva Helvecia — still called Colonia Suiza — before 11:00 am. Founded in 1862 by Swiss immigrants, joined later by other Europeans, the town built Uruguay's first tourist hotel, the Granja Hotel Suizo (1872), and founded the dairy traditions that made Colonia department the country's most productive.

The real draw is Queso Colonia, invented here by settlers replicating Emmental and Gruyère. The first dairy opened in 1869; by 1891 there were 100. Artisan factories along Ruta 1 still welcome visitors, and a wheel travels easily.

Afternoon in the Barrio Histórico

Colónia del Sacramento is reached by mid-afternoon via Avenida General Flores. The Barrio Histórico occupies a small peninsula founded by the Portuguese in 1680 opposite Buenos Aires; it changed hands repeatedly — ceded to Spain in 1777, reoccupied by Portugal, absorbed into Brazil in 1816 — before joining Uruguay after independence in 1825. Its organic street plan makes it a UNESCO World Heritage Site like no other.

The route reaches the Portón de Campo just before 1:00 pm. Built by the Portuguese in 1745, this gate and drawbridge was the city's only land entrance; its chains and old cannons remain. Beyond it, cobbled streets mix Portuguese and Spanish styles.

South of the Portón, the Calle de los Suspiros — Street of Sighs — is the barrio's most photographed lane: pie de moleque paving and bougainvillea-draped houses toward the river. Its name's origin is disputed — wind, or the taverns of its rougher years.

From the river end, a detour leads to the Faro de Colonia, rising from the ruins of the 17th-century Convento de San Francisco. Built in 1857, it's modest, but its view over the barrio and Plata is unbeatable.

West along Paseo de San Gabriel, the Bastión de San Pedro marks the peninsula's southern tip, an 18th-century fort turned park. On clear days, Buenos Aires is faintly visible across the water.

From the bastión, the route passes the Basílica del Santísimo Sacramento on the Plaza Mayor. Founded with the city in 1680, the current building dates to 1808; a lightning strike later ignited stored gunpowder, and Charles Darwin, passing in 1833, called the ruins a monument to "the power of electricity and gunpowder united." Rebuilt in 1842, its towers still dominate the quarter.

Evening on the Rambla

By late afternoon, day-trippers thin out. Find a table on the rambla and watch the light drop toward Argentina over a glass of Tannat.
